1. Donating A Tax-Advantaged Charitable Distribution From An Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

If you have a Traditional IRA and are at least 70½ years old, a tax-free gift from your account may be a good option for contributing to IHE/Project Archaeology. The technical name for this type of contribution is a Qualified Charitable Distribution.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD): The Essentials

A QCD is a tax-free distribution directly from your IRA to a qualified, tax-exempt charity, such as IHE.

  • You must be at least 70½ years old.

  • The distribution must be paid by your IRA trustee directly to the charity.

  • Traditional IRA distributions are normally taxable, but those that are donations to qualified charities are excluded from taxable income. QCDs provide a tax benefit for those whose financial situations rule out itemizing charitable contributions on their tax returns.

  • For those at least age 73 with required minimum distributions (RMD), QCDs count toward the RMD for the year.

  • You can make a charitable distribution from a Roth IRA under certain conditions, but there is no tax benefit because Roth IRA distributions are generally not subject to taxes.

Setting up a gift from your IRA

Contact your IRA trustee for directions. You may be able to set up the transaction yourself within your online account. When IHE receives the funds, we will send you a specific written acknowledgement of your IRA contribution for your records.

2. Gifts of Securities

IHE/Project Archaeology welcomes stock, bond, and mutual fund transfers.

Donating appreciated shares of stock or mutual funds may offer better tax savings than donating a cash gift. First, you avoid paying capital-gains tax on the increase in value. Second, you receive a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the shares on the date of the gift.

It is advisable to consult your financial advisor before making gifts of stock or other securities. If the securities are held by a broker or banker, you can have them transferred directly to IHE’s nonprofit account at Fidelity, where they will be sold so the funds can contribute to our work immediately. Contact us for transfer information and instructions or other assistance via the methods at the top of this page.

3. Planned Giving:

Create Your Legacy for Cultural Knowledge, Understanding, and Respect

Including the Institute for Heritage Education (IHE) in your estate plan or as a beneficiary of a financial account allows your gift to support this work beyond your lifetime. As Project Archaeology’s national nonprofit partner, we will continue to reach teachers and students for years to come with this award-winning program’s materials and methods, contributing to cultural understanding, vibrant communities, and a more peaceful world.

Come join the IHE/PA Legacy Circle with a planned gift as described below. Please let us know so we can include you in the Legacy Circle!

THROUGH YOUR WILL

You can establish your wishes for a gift that will allow IHE to determine how to use the funds based on the greatest need and impact by stating in your will or trust that the gift is “for the Institute for Heritage Education’s unrestricted charitable use and purpose.” Please refer to IHE in any legal document as “the Institute for Heritage Education, a nonprofit corporation located at P.O. Box 6063, Bozeman, MT 59771, Federal Tax ID 47-1973475, or its successor.”

If you wish to designate your gift for a particular purpose, please get in touch with us to discuss options, using one of the contact methods at the top of this page.

 AS A BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION

You can designate IHE as a beneficiary for a percentage of the assets of an investment or bank account, an IRA or other retirement plan, a donor-advised fund, or a life insurance policy. Make the designation according to your custodian’s policy; contact them for details. Some brokerages allow you to designate a beneficiary securely within your online account.

Thank you for considering a legacy gift to IHE/Project Archaeology!

4. Donor-Advised Funds

The Institute for Heritage Education (IHE), EIN 47-1973475, is eligible for contributions from donor-advised funds (DAF). You can support our heritage education mission by directing gifts to IHE through your DAF.

With your donation to IHE, you will be supporting our work of fostering understanding of our rich and broad cultural heritage; improving science, social science, and literacy education; and strengthening citizenship education to help preserve our cultural and archaeological legacy. The primary beneficiaries of this work are teachers and their students, mainly in upper elementary and middle school grades. Educators also use Project Archaeology materials and methods in nonformal settings, such as museums and visitor centers at heritage sites.

This DAFDirect widget will link your DAF to IHE. Simply select the platform, designate “Institute for Heritage Education” to receive your donation, and enter the amount you would like to donate. Thank you for your contribution!
